How to Set Up Gym Storage Racks

So that your gym storage does not cause any problems in the first place, a few simple decisions need to be made before you start putting the storage up.

Pick the Right Spot First

Position racks close to equipment to be stored and allow a minimum floor width of 1m. Dumbbell racks will typically be located near the bench press, plate trees near the barbell area. Use the gym floor layout and equipment spacing guidance where applicable for commercial gyms.

Fix the Rack Securely

Most freestanding racks will need anchoring to the floor when loaded with weights. This can usually be done using the manufacturer’s supplied hardware and fixed into the solid subfloor as opposed to the gym floor rubber matting. A bolt-down plate tree for example is much less likely to fall over when fully loaded compared to a freestanding equivalent.

Organise by Weight and Use

Heaviest items at the bottom of the rack (such as the heaviest plates). Mid-level shelves for lighter weights that are frequently used. Band pegs etc. should be grouped together and stored above the barbell holders so they do not get tangled up with them.

Check Everything Once It’s Loaded

Once set up, check that the loaded rack does not shift when pushed firmly, and also check that the weight collars, band hooks, etc. are seated correctly in the various components. It’s also worth checking again after the first week of use to make sure that everything is still stable and that all components are still securely attached.

A well-organised storage system also means safe floors and smooth training sessions.
