What you need to get into macrame

Macrame is a delicate craft form, comprised of carefully knotted strings. Decorate items, such as wall hangings, plant hangers, bags and even jewellery can be created by tying knots in coloured or natural string or cord.

Start Simply

What many people love about macrame is that it’s all done with the hands – there’s no sewing or needles involved. As a result, it can be a very relaxing, mindful craft activity – and it’s easy to get started, too.

Many people opt for a beginners’ macrame kit like /www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/macrame-kits, but it’s not difficult to pick up the things you need to get started.

Cord

If you’re new to macrame, ideally start with some cotton rope around 5mm in thickness. This makes it easy to handle. Cotton’s the best material, certainly for beginners, because it’s soft on the hands, and easy to knot. Avoid strings much thinner than this – while they can create lovely detailed projects, it’s much trickier to work with for beginners.

Rope

Thicker ropes are an option, particularly for larger projects where you want to incorporate some texture for a boho, natural look. The main difference between rope and string is that rope has twisted strands, while string is untwisted, so rope projects are typically more textured and wavy.

Basic Tools

Beyond your main choice of cord, you’ll also need to get hold of some basic craft tools, such as some sharp scissors and a crafting mat. You’ll also need a wooden dowel to anchor your project.
