Laminate Flooring

First of all, there is laminate. Laminate is actually a fibreboard plank that has a picture of wood on its surface. It can really vary in how realistic it looks, according to how much texture it has – very smooth laminates are not as realistic as those with more depth and grain. In addition, if you spend a little more on the laminate, it will have bevelled edges on the planks or tiles, making it look more naturalistic.

Laminate can be quite hard to walk on, but it can be useful as a background surface on which you can lay a nice fluffy rug.

Engineered Wood

People are often confused about what this actually is, and you can find some excellent background information on the Which? site.

In fact, engineered wood is a sophisticated product in which layers of wood are glued together to form the plank and then another real wood layer is put on top. The great thing about an engineered wood floor is that you can get something like an oak veneer for the top layer without paying anything like the amount it would cost to lay a solid oak floor.

Furthermore, engineered wood can be sanded several times, so you can restore the original perfect finish even though children, dogs and shoes have done their worst. It tends to be more stable than solid wood because its design allows it to move without warping. It provides a very attractive finish and can add value to a house that you are intending to sell.

Engineered wood isn’t as cheap as laminate because it uses more wood. And like laminate, it’s not really suitable for any areas that are damp.

Solid Wood Flooring

This is beautiful but can be expensive initially. However, if you have a family that is going to give the floor some hard wear, a solid wood floor can be a good investment because wood can easily be sanded to restore the original finish. And nothing looks quite as good.
