A routine fire alarm inspection is typically carried out following a specific checklist of items to check. Knowing what to look for will allow you to check that a proper job has been carried out.
Test Detectors and Call Points Zone by Zone
Test all Detectors and Call Points – recording which Zone they trigger on the Control Panel. Any failing to trigger a corresponding Zone will require replacing before signing off the visit.
Check the Control Panel and Battery
Any indicators on the panel are checked for faults and the main power supply and the backup battery are tested under load. It is well known that a fire can occur at any time, therefore it is critical that the battery is able to power the system when the mains power supply has been cut.
Inspect Sounder Coverage
Check the sounder levels in all rooms and areas (including any storerooms and welfare facilities) to ensure they are sufficient and audible. When inspecting fire alarm systems, follow the relevant recommended inspection standards to ensure that the system is inspected in line with current guidelines to ensure adequate coverage.
Examine Cable Routes and Connections
Check cabling visible in the open for signs of damage, pinching, or poor routing. Check terminals at the bases of detectors and at junction boxes are tightened up and recorded.
Review the Logbook and Certification
We also check the logbook for a history of previous faults and confirm that the system has been tested on a weekly basis.
